Despite all odds, some heartbreaking stories have a happy ending.

After a fatal tornado in Van, Texas, took the life of her owner, a giant 8-year-old Pyrenees found herself alone on this world. The poor pooch was discovered in her dead human’s arms and rescued by kind-hearted people who volunteered to help an animal shelter that was in charge of collecting wounded animals after the natural catastrophe.

Fortunately, luck smiled on the poor pooch as one of the volunteers decided to adopt her and give her a forever home, as well as a new name – Emma.

Here’s what the director of the Nicholas Pet Haven said about the day they found her:

“Emma went and crawled up underneath his [her former owner’s] arm for comfort, so a very sad situation, but she’s going to have a good home.”

Michelle Shockley, the volunteer who fell in love with Emma, told ABC News that Emma was in a large crate in the back of a pick-up truck when she first saw the frightened doggy. Here’s an excert from her statement:

“I was sitting in the back of the pick-up and she came out on my lap.  She was just exhausted and very traumatized.”

The moment she lay her eyes on Emma, Shockley knew they were meant to be together.

The veterinarian who treated Emma told Shockley that she suffered a head trauma and an inner ear injury. Shockley confirmed that the vet said she was battered and bruised throughout her body, and that she was actually at Ground Zero. Emma is now in good hands, and is expected to fully recover in no time.
