Wednesday night Army Specialist Tyler Roberts finally ended a 4-year-long search for his former teammate he spent every day with while serving in Afghanistan. Her name is Donna, and she’s a 6-year-old Belgian Malinois, and a retired Tactical Explosive Detective Dog, trained to locate bombs and other explosive devices.
Donna and Tyler were deployed to Afghanistan in 2011, and during their mission there, they found hundreds of pounds of ammonium nitrate. When they returned back to Colorado, they parted ways, and Tyler has been looking for her ever since – with a plan to adopt her.
It seems that Donna was adopted by an unlicensed private contracting company along with 10 other TEDD’s. The company ended up abandoning the dogs at Mt. Hope Kennels in Richmond, VA. The owner, Greg Meredith, took the dogs, thinking that they would not stay longer than two months; however, 15 months later, the dogs were handed over to the United States War Dogs Association in Burlington, N.J. and Mission K9 Rescue of Houston, Texas.
Thanks to the partnership between the two organizations and Mt. Hope Kennels, Tyler was reunited with Donna, and they couldn’t be happier.
Here’s what Roberts said:
“I owe her my life and I intend to spoil her for the remainder of hers.”
