America’s love for Labs is unprecedented, although Bulldogs are beginning to seize some of the spotlight.
The Labrador retriever is America’s top dog for the 24th consecutive year, according to American Kennel Club rankings released Thursday. AKC Vice President said that Americans undoubtedly love Labs the most, but Bulldogs are ‘clamoring to dominate.’
In addition to being the fourth most popular breed, their adorable bat-eared relatives, French Bulldogs, made it to the top 10 for the first time in almost 100 years. AKC attributes the rise of the Bulldogs to their ‘natural tendency to bond with kids, an easy-to-care-for coat and minimal exercise needs.’
Beagles, who ranked fifth, recently hit the headlines when a cute Beagle named Miss P took home the Best in Show award at the Westminster Dog Show earlier this month.
The AKC’s most popular dog list is derived from the number of dogs within each breed registered with the club, according to ABC News.
Here’s the list of America’s top ten dog breeds for 2014:
- Labrador Retriever
- German Shepherd Dog
- Golden Retriever
- Bulldog
- Beagle
- Yorkshire Terrier
- Poodle
- Boxer
- French Bulldog
- Rottweiler
