Miss P, a 4-year-old regal beagle from British Columbia, shocked the audience at the 139th annual Westminster Dog Show in New York City by winning top honors.
Bred by Lori Crandlemore of Tashtin Kennels in Enderby, B.C., Miss P outshined 2,711 dogs of 192 breeds at the two-day event at Madison Square Garden, according to Forbes.
The Best in Show judge David Merriam deliberated for around 20 minutes before announcing the winner, a 15-inch beagle and the grandniece of Uno, the first beagle to ever win the big show, in 2008.
The crowd gasped as the judge ignored their favorite, Swagger, an Old English sheepdog, and several other dogs who were likelier candidates for the prestigious prize. Nevertheless, Merriam said that Miss P “had wonderful type” and a “wonderful head” and that as he watched her walk, he said he could simultaneously see “the beagle in the ring and the beagle in the field.”
Will Alexander, Miss P’s handler, was obviously overwhelmed by Miss P’s triumph.
“She does this quite a lot but not at quite this magnitude. She is a princess. She just never let me down. She didn’t make any mistakes.”
He added that he wouldn’t describe Miss P’s win as an upset, and concluded that the handlers at the show are all masters of their job.
Congrats to Miss P!
