2. Heel Command
This is an extremely important command for Pit Bulls. These dogs already get such a bad rap that it is important that they are trained to be on their best behavior, because there is always going to be someone judging them, waiting for them to do something wrong. You better believe that if you are at the dog park and a dog starts a fight with your dog, your four-legged friend will be blamed because he is labeled a Pit Bull. Therefore, he should come to you, and heel when called. Heel position should be no more than 8 inches from your side. To teach this on a leash, have your dog on your left side. Stop and pat your left hand on your left thigh while saying “heel.” When he moves into a position where his front leg is aligned with your leg, praise and provide an “okay” command to continue walking. Only praise when he falls into the correct position. When he is comfortable with the command, then you can practice around the house or backyard off the leash.
