2. POLICE DOGS WERE FIRST USED TO TRACK DOWN JACK THE RIPPER

Despite the fact that dogs were obviously used in some sort of crime fighting before the 19th century, the first time police officers actually used them in an attempt to solve a case was in 1986. It was the time when all of London walked in fear and people shivered at the very mention of Whitechapel and Jack the Ripper.

Since everyone was desperate to see the unidentified serial killer behind bars, the press gave the Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police of London, Sir Charles Warren, a really hard time for failing to catch Jack the Ripper and at one point started harshly criticizing him for not attempting to use bloodhounds in the pursuit.

It didn’t take Warren a lot of time to obtain two bloodhounds, both of which were somewhat trained for scent tracking. Unfortunately, they proved to be pretty useless in this particular case, seeing as one of the dogs attacked Warren himself and the police later had to organize a search for the pooches who simply ran off one day.
