4. New Guinea Singing Dog
The New Guinea Singing Dog, also known as the New Guinea Dingo, the New Guinea Wild Dog, bush dingo and Hallstrom dog, is a breed that was completely isolated in its natural habitat in New Guinea for 30,000 years, before it was discovered by expeditions to the area in the 1950s.
The breed got its name from its distinctive habit of getting together and howling in different pitches, producing a sound resembling singing. The New Guinea Singing Dog is a true wild dog. There are less than 100 of them in the world, outside of their natural habitat, of course. Even in New Guinea, they are considered wild animals and are nearly impossible to track down.
Even the domesticated or captive-bred dogs are hard to handle and are not recommended for families. However, experienced breeders can train them quite successfully, making them great companion dogs. These dogs have relatively short legs and wide head, and their coat is brown black or tan, with white spots. It is a strong, shy and very canny breed.
