Dogs are social animals and generally don’t tolerate being left alone for long periods of time. However, since most dog owners have full time jobs, we have gathered a list of 20 intelligent and independent breeds who are totally fine on their own. Of course, most dogs can learn to tolerate your absence, but these dogs are perfect for people with hectic schedules.

1. Bullmastiff

Even though they can be reserved toward people they don’t know, Bullmastiffs would do anything for their human family. They are fearless family guardians who were originally developed in the 19th century by gamekeepers to guard estates. This breed was bred to be brave, fast and self-assured and their intimidating appearance has discouraged intruders ever since they were created. In addition to being fierce protectors, Bullmastiffs are wonderful family companions who would give their lives for their humans.

Although they are big dogs, they aren’t a high-energy breed. Basically, Bullmastiffs live comfortably in apartments as long as they are taken on a few short walks per day. Since they are calm-natured pooches, Bullmastiffs are excellent therapy dogs who want to please their humans. Naturally, their owner needs to be firm, fair and consistent in order to train such an independent breed.

Having in mind that Bullmastiffs have a long history of being a guard dog, they will do fine in households where people work as long as humans devote plenty of time to the dog when they are at home. Bullmastiffs will also do well in fenced yards, but it is advisable to allow them to live in the home. Apart from defending your home from unwanted visitors, the dog will develop a special bond with you so they’ll want to do everything in their power to protect you. Another plus is that they get along great with kids and show a lot of patience with them.
