It never hurts to bring in a professional trainer for a few sessions. Maybe you have no problem getting your dog to sit, but stay is a problem; a trainer can work with you. She can also go through steps for an introduction. One of the best things about Flat-Coated Retrievers is that they are highly trainable, if they know what you want. So, fetching your diaper bag might not be such a stretch. If the initial introduction is really stressing you, arrange for the trainer to be there. Your dog will have already established a respected relationship with her, and should respond to her commands on the day without a problem. If you are a single mother, this is a great idea, too. Managing a new baby and Fido at one time when you haven’t slept and your energy level is low will not be easy.
