13. Maltese

Unlike most small breeds, the very first Maltese ever bred was the same size dog you see today. Sometimes confused with the Bichon Frise, this dog is classified with the American Kennel Club as a toy breed.

The precocious Maltese originated in Malta, but he’s been known by several names down through the ages, including:

  • Ancient Dog of Malta;
  • Roman Ladies’ Dog;
  • Maltese Lion Dog.

This little dog is recognized over the world by his mop of snowy white hair that’s usually pulled up into a top knot above his eyes. This tiny breed is devoted and slightly yappy. He makes a good watch dog in that he hears everything and isn’t afraid to report back to his loyal owner. If you prefer a dog that’s not prone to rather high-pitched theatrics from time to time, the Maltese is probably not the dog for you.

The Maltese dog breed is a friendly, curious little dog that has a royal history. Loved by aristocrats around the globe, this breed has been around for at least 2,800 years, says the AKC. Often chosen as pets by kings and queens, the Maltese is the perfect companion dog, even today.

He’s fearless, vivacious, friendly, energetic and portable. His coat, when well-groomed, is his crowning glory. While he weighs only as much as 7 pounds, he requires constant upkeep and grooming to keep his long, flowing hair from becoming matted.

According to The Dog Channel, these little dogs are unfortunately prone to leg and teeth problems, as well as abscesses caused by grass seeds. Their low-to-the-ground framework requires constant grooming to keep seeds and barbs from entering the skin, especially around the nose and between the pads of the feet, where they can cause great discomfort.

The cost of a Maltese pup varies according to region and whether or not he’s AKC-certified, but top pups can run about $5000.
