4. BARRY

The Saint Bernard dogs were bred specifically for one purpose – look for and rescue people stranded in the treacherous Saint Bernard Pass between Italy and Switzerland. The dogs worked in pairs – one of them would stay with the victim and keep him warm while the other went back for help. And while Barry wasn’t the dog who started the tradition, he is certainly one of the best-known ones.

In the early 1880’s, during his service with the monks of the Saint Bernard, Barry saved some 40 people from freezing to death in the dangerous mountains. The most famous case was a little boy who somehow got lost and was almost dead when Barry found him, put him on his back and pulled him to safety. After Barry retired, the monks made sure to always have one dog named Barry in their search and rescue squad. This tradition still lives even today when the technology is so advanced it seems almost impossible to get lost.
